The Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi, has initiated a program focused on skills training and entrepreneurship with the aim of assisting the youth and unemployed individuals in South Africa. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for beneficiaries of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) as well as young people who are currently without employment. The ultimate goal of skills training programme is to facilitate their integration into the job market or support them in establishing their own businesses.
Minister announced that a budget of R23.8 billion will be allocated for the implementation of this plan. The program will offer opportunities ranging from 12 to 36 months in duration. The implementation of this program will span across all provinces, with a total of 333 recommended projects. Aimed at providing training, support for small enterprises, and employment opportunities to approximately 704,000 individuals who are currently unemployed.
The launch of the projects will commence on 6 April 2024 in Gauteng with the participation of the provincial government. This will be followed by launches in KwaZulu-Natal on 16 April, Western Cape on 17 April. Eastern Cape on 19 April, Free State on 22 April, North West on 23 April, and Mpumalanga on 24 April. Subsequently, Limpopo will host the program’s launch on 30 April. The final roll-out will occur in the Northern Cape province on 9 May 2024.
The Minister emphasized that all projects have undergone rigorous quality assurance processes to ensure compliance with policy and legislation. Additionally, necessary controls, capacity, and resources are in place to ensure that these programs yield tangible results in terms of job creation and prospects.
Employability interventions will be implemented through contractual agreements that guarantee employment for beneficiaries for a minimum period of one year after the intervention. Minister Nxesi expressed hope that companies and industries in various sectors such as agriculture, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), construction, engineering, manufacturing, education, transport, and mining will contribute significantly to these initiatives.
